چکیده
FEBRUARY 2012 CAtARACt & REFRACtivE SURgERY todAY 39 A lthough much has been written on the topic, there is no universally accepted treatment for presbyopia. Therapies range from bifocal spectacles to scleral expansion to accommodating IOLs to corneal procedures such as presbyLASIK or conductive keratoplasty. An intrastromal approach is currently being investigated in FDA clinical studies for the treatment of near-plano presbyopia. The three inlays discussed in this article are in different stages of the FDA investigational device exemption (IDE) process and are not yet approved for use in the United States. Figure 1 provides a brief description of the technologies, their materials, and their mechanisms of action.

JUNE 2010 CATARACT & REFRACTIVE SURGERY TODAY 41 I consider customized wavefront-guided laser vision correction a critical component of today’s refractive surgical practice, because it delivers better outcomes than conventional treatments. Since I began performing customized corrections using the iLASIK suite (Abbott Medical Optics Inc., Santa Ana, CA) along with other technological improvement...

JANUARY 2008 I CATARACT & REFRACTIVE SURGERY TODAY I 23 T he success of the continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis at reducing complications and providing satisfactory refractive outcomes depends on its centration, location, and size. Studies have demonstrated that the capsulorhexis’ diameter should be small enough to overlap 360o of the IOL optic’s periphery to reduce the risk of posterior capsu...

JUNE 2010 CATARACT & REFRACTIVE SURGERY TODAY EUROPE 23 A s we reported in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery,1 use of a thick intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) may enhance the surgical effect in patients with keratoconus. Although commercially available ICRSs are limited in thickness, one can achieve the effect of thicker segments by stacking two within a single intrastromal...

SEPTEMBER 2010 CATARACT & REFRACTIVE SURGERY TODAY EUROPE 35 T he introduction of wavefront-sensing techniques to ophthalmology has redefined the clinical meaning of refractive error. Now, all imperfections in the components and materials within the eye that cause light rays to deviate from their desired path are referred to as optical aberrations. Lower-order aberrations (defocus and astigmati...

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 CATARACT & REFRACTIVE SURGERY TODAY EUROPE 1 A ccuracy of biometric calculations and, more important, of refractive results depends on three main factors: preoperative biometric data including axial length, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, and corneal curvature power variables; power calculation formulas; and quality and accuracy of the IOL. In the past 15 years, s...
